The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that it has received reports of serious and life-threatening adverse events involving sildenafil citrate, an over-the-counter drug commonly sold as Viagra, that was found to cause death.
"We received a report from the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a fatal hypersensitivity reaction (anaphylaxis) with sildenafil citrate," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. "We're very concerned."
The FDA noted that the sildenafil-induced death of a healthy male volunteer, which was treated with the drug, is rare. The drug is also a prescription drug, and it's a relatively new drug that has not been approved for use in the U.
According to the FDA, the adverse event involved was a hypersensitivity reaction to sildenafil citrate that was described as "severe, temporary, and progressive." The FDA added that the drug was effective in the treatment of the patient's condition, including the development of anaphylaxis, and the development of the patient's death.
